    Company:

Lotek Wireless is a world leader in the development and manufacture of animal monitoring systems. Our innovative and internationally recognized radio, satellite, archival and acoustic monitoring solutions allow researchers to track animals of almost any size, in almost any environment. Our equipment reveals fascinating journeys of individual animals that contribute to biologist’s understanding of animal movement. Our craft is technology; our passion is the environment. We are committed to providing innovative solutions for a sustainable future. Whether an animal moves through a terrestrial, freshwater, marine or avian environment, Lotek has a system to track it.

    Role Overview:

We are looking for an innovative Mechanical Engineer to join our R&D team, specializing in electronics packaging for telemetry devices. Our products range from miniature sensors for small species (fish, insects, birds) to robust systems for large animals (herbivores, carnivores, marine mammals). This role requires creativity and precision to design compact, durable, and environmentally resilient packaging solutions that meet stringent performance reliability and manufacturability requirements.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Design & Development: Create mechanical packaging solutions for electronic assemblies, ensuring size, weight, and durability meet species-specific requirements.
    • Environmental Adaptation: Engineer housings that withstand diverse conditions -freshwater, saltwater, extreme temperatures, pressure variations, and mechanical stress.
    • Material Selection: Choose biocompatible, corrosion-resistant, and lightweight materials suitable for long-term deployment in natural habitats.
    • Thermal & Structural Analysis: Perform simulations (FEA, CFD) to ensure thermal management and structural integrity under operational conditions.
    • Miniaturization & Integration: Collaborate with electrical engineers to optimize packaging for compactness without compromising functionality.
    • Prototyping & Testing: Support rapid prototyping, assembly, and validation, including waterproofing, pressure testing, and vibration/shock testing.
    • Manufacturability: Ensure designs are manufacturable including: documentation, training, design and procurement of production jigs.
    • Compliance & Standards: Ensure designs meet relevant environmental and safety standards.
    • Innovation: Research and implement advanced packaging technologies for next-generation telemetry devices.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
    • 10+ years in mechanical design for electronics packaging, preferably in ruggedized or miniaturized systems.
    • Proficiency in CAD tools (SolidWorks).
    • Strong knowledge of materials science (polymers, composites, metals) and manufacturing processes (injection molding, die casting, CNC machining, additive manufacturing).
    • Experience with sealing techniques (O-rings, adhesives, ultrasonic welding) for waterproof and pressure-resistant designs.
    • Familiarity with FEA and CFD tools (Solidworks Simulation Professional).
    • Excellent problem-solving skills.
    • Experience and willingness to work in multi-disciplinary teams.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience designing for harsh environments (marine, wildlife, aerospace, or defense).
    • Knowledge of biocompatibility and animal safety considerations.
    • Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping and environmental testing.
    • Understanding of low-power electronics and thermal dissipation in compact enclosures.

    Role Details:

    • Hours: Full Time, Permanent – 37.5 hours/week
    • Location: Newmarket, ON
    • Current Vacancy: Yes
    • Compensation Range: $80,000 – $100,000
