One of the greatest thrills for ecologists is the ability to track animals over vast distances. These kinds of studies provide critical insights into the ecology of migratory animals and their extraordinary feats. For example, determining how birds behave in different landscapes, and what types of habitats they use during migration, can tell us whether conservation efforts are being directed in the right way.
Thanks to a combination of miniaturized radio transmitters and a new, expansive network of receivers, researchers are now able to track movements of even very small birds over distances that span the entire continent. And Bird Studies Canada is playing a leading role in making this happen.
