Monitoring Animals
in Terrestrial Habitats

Both radio and satellite technologies can be used to track animals on land. Lotek is a world leader in the design and manufacture of VHF radio and GPS satellite tracking systems for large and small mammals.

Lotek's VHF radio and GPS collars can be put on animals of almost any size. Here are just a few examples of species that have been studied with our equipment to date:

GPS: bear, cougar, elk, deer, moose, caribou, elephant, wildebeest, eland, sheep.

VHF radios: pine marten, deer, wolf, fox, moose, caribou, bear, elk, raccoon, coyote, sheep, lynx, hare, porcupine.

Several choices are available to you for each type of terrestrial tracking system that we offer. If you are employing either VHF radios or GPS collars (which come with VHF radios), for example, you can either track your animals manually or automatically. You can also choose from a range of special transmitter options, if your research objectives extend beyond the collection of positional data alone. Similarly, our GPS systems offer options that allow you to set and optimize your data retrieval times, collect the data by modem and monitor multiple frequencies.

Lotek monitoring systems have played an important part in many types of research on terrestrial species, including studies on:
  • the effect of timber management guidelines on Ontario's moose population
  • habitat utilization of Swedish moose
  • the movement of red deer stags in the Scottish Highlands
  • the protection of elephants from ivory poachers in Kenya
  • the movement and habitat utilization of bison in Canada's Prince Albert National Park
  • home range of Ontario black bears
  • the control of rabies in red fox populations in southern Ontario
  • micro-habitat utilization of caribou in British Columbia

Among the types of information that you can obtain using our terrestrial tracking systems are the following:
  • Positional data
  • Temperature data
  • Activity data
  • Mortality data

Here are just a few examples of the types of research that you can do with Lotek's terrestrial tracking systems:
  • habitat studies
  • resource utilization studies
  • migration studies
  • environmental impact studies

Lotek offers a wide choice of receiver configurations, transmitters and accessories. If you are at all uncertain about which technology might best serve your study, we'd be glad to help you sort through the options to select the best system for your research needs.

In fact, the telemetry system design most suitable for a particular study is dependent upon a range of application-specific factors. We invite you to contact us for answers to your questions. Our application specialists will be happy to discuss individual tracking system requirements with you in detail, and assist you through all the stages of your project planning to ensure that your system design and data gathering capabilities are optimized for your study.
