Monitoring Avian Species

Lotek's product line includes a number of devices for ornithologists wishing to monitor birds in the air or in the water. We offer a growing number of radio receiver, datalogger, transmitter and archival tag solutions that are ideally suited to avian research.

Lotek's radio and archival technology have been used to study a variety of bird species. The list includes Western Sandpipers, Red Knots, Northern Fulmars, California Condors, Sooty Shearwaters, Bald Eagles, Thick-billed Murres, Mallards, and many more.

Radio transmitters can be digitally encoded, allowing over 500 birds to be uniquely identified on the same frequency. Conventional "beeper" transmitters are also available.

Radio receivers can be used for automatic remote datalogging and downloading or for manual tracking.

Archival tags provide temperature and dive depth profile information. Archival tags providing geolocation information, also known as Global Location Sensing or GLS tags, are also available.

Using Lotek LTD 2400 archival tags, researchers have revealed for the first time the extraordinary migrations of the sooty shearwater seabird. Click the image above to view the full research article (PDF), or see our news section for more info and links.

  • Seabird foraging behaviour: publication
  • Location and timing of staging areas for Western Sandpipers
  • Diving performance of Thick-billed Murres
  • Parental attendance of Red Knots during chick rearing

Lotek's telemetry instruments can monitor bird location, temperature, pressure/depth and light. This means that a variety of study questions can be addressed. Some examples include:

  • Movement patterns within a breeding territory
  • Diving patterns in relation to fisheries operations
  • Determination of migratory routes and staging areas
  • Ambient environmental temperature at roost sites
